Settings

To open the Settings window, choose Exif Editor -> Settings… from the main menu, or press Cmd+,.

The window has two tabs: Exiftool with the application preferences, and Unlock with purchase options. Settings are saved automatically as soon as you change them.

Exiftool

GPS longitude/latitude format

Choose how GPS coordinates are displayed in the file popovers on the map:

OptionExample
Degrees, minutes, and seconds (default)49°35'19.12'
Degrees and decimal minutes49°35.316'
Decimal degrees49.58861

This setting changes only how the coordinates are displayed. The GPS editors in the tags form always use decimal degrees, and the value stored in the file is not affected.

Exiftool autocorrections

Exif Editor uses ExifTool to write metadata. These two options are passed to ExifTool when files are saved. Both are turned off by default. As the window says, turn them on only if you know what you are doing. When a file cannot be saved because ExifTool reports a problem in its existing metadata, these options may help.

  • -F - attempt to fix incorrect offsets – tries to repair broken offsets in the maker notes while writing.
  • -m - ignore minor errors and warnings – lets ExifTool write files that it would otherwise refuse because of minor problems in the existing metadata.

The options apply only to saving. They are not used when you remove all metadata.

File dates

Change file create time on save to: and Change file modify time on save to: control the file dates that Finder shows after Exif Editor saves a file. Each has three options:

  • Exif create date value / Exif modify date value (default) – use the date from the EXIF Create Date or Modify Date tag.
  • Don't change – keep the file date as it was before saving.
  • Current time – let the operating system set the date, as with any other saved file.

See File dates vs. Exif dates for details.

Unlock

The Unlock tab shows the options for purchasing Exif Editor: a yearly subscription or a one-time purchase. Saving changes and removing metadata require a purchase. Once Exif Editor is unlocked, the tab shows Exif Editor is Unlocked.
