Removing metadata

Exif Editor can remove all metadata from the selected files at once.

  1. Select the files in the files list.
  2. Choose Metadata -> Remove All from the main menu.
  3. Confirm with the Remove All Metadata button, or cancel with Don’t Remove.

Unlike tag editing, removal is not waiting for you to save the files. The metadata are removed from the files on disk immediately, and the files are then reloaded. You cannot undo the removal.

Which files can be cleaned

The Remove All command is available only when every selected file:

  • is a JPEG, TIFF, Photoshop (PSD, PSB), or HEIC file,

If any selected file does not meet these conditions, for example a PNG, GIF, WEBP, or a RAW file, the command is disabled. Select only the supported files and try again.

What is removed

Exif Editor removes all metadata groups that can be deleted, including EXIF, IPTC, XMP, GPS, and maker notes. Some information that is needed to display the image correctly cannot be removed. For example, JPEG files keep the Adobe colour information (APP14 segment) when it is present, and TIFF files keep the basic image structure tags.

Removing metadata also changes the file dates according to the settings described in File dates vs. Exif dates.
